Recognizing the pain and challenges animal lovers face.

Why am I here?
If you’ve found your way to this blog, chances are you’re an animal lover. As advocates for our furry, feathered, and scaly companions, many of us have seen more than our share of heartbreak. Those of us in sheltering, rescue, and veterinary medicine witness cases of neglect—or simple apathy—far too often. It can wear down even the most optimistic among us.
But take heart, gentle reader: this is not one of those stories. In fact, by the end, I hope you’ll be smiling.
A story of unexpected kindness
Recently, at one of our hospitals that manages both general practice cases and emergencies, a young woman arrived with her daughter to have their pup’s sutures removed. As the woman pulled into a parking space, she stepped out with the dog—and unknowingly left the vehicle in drive. The SUV lurched forward, hopping the curb and grazing her. Her daughter, still inside, reached over from the passenger seat to put the car in park… but accidentally shifted into reverse.
The vehicle shot backward, arcing across the lot before slamming into the rear quarter panel of another parked car.
Both women chased the moving SUV, desperate to stop it. But an open door on a rolling vehicle offers little chance of success. Thankfully, aside from a scraped knee when one of them fell, neither was seriously hurt. The dog was safe. And as luck would have it, the owners of the second car were already inside and unharmed.
Compassion amid distress
Still, the ordeal was too much for the driver. Already overwhelmed by a recent dog fight between her pets, an ER visit, and the looming cost of veterinary care, she spiraled into a full-blown panic attack. The couple whose car was struck remained calm and compassionate, reassuring her that they understood it was an accident. Their kindness, however, couldn’t quite cut through her distress.
And this is where the story transforms.
Amid her panic, the woman kept repeating that she didn’t have enough money to cover the sedation her pup needed that day. She was frightened, ashamed, and drowning in the moment.
The couple quietly pulled me aside and asked, “Is her dog going to be okay?”
I explained, in general terms, that yes—the pup just needed some sedation to remove staples and sutures around his face, and that our team was working with her on the financial piece.
They hesitated, then said something I’ll never forget: “We have some cash … would it help?”
I thanked them for their generosity and mentioned that while our team had the situation handled, Anna’s Pet Care Fund is always grateful for donations. Shortly after, the police arrived to take the report, and I returned to my duties.
An act of generosity
About fifteen minutes later, one of our front desk team members came downstairs holding two $50 bills.
“Tom,” she said, “the couple whose car was hit wanted to make sure the pup’s bill was covered so he could get the care he needs.”
My jaw dropped. Imagine walking out to find that someone else’s car has crashed into yours— and your first instinct is to help them.
Far too often, we dwell on the negative. We shake our heads at irresponsibility or poor decisions. We grow cynical. But yesterday, I was reminded that there is still so much goodness in this world. There are angels walking among us. And their compassion has inspired me to spread far more positivity, and far less negativity.
Has someone ever helped you during a tough time?
I’d love to hear your story.
